Neurology Outpatient Clinic Building Completed in Just Nine Months
The new Neurology Outpatient Clinic Building at Akdeniz University Hospital has been completed in a remarkably short period of nine months and has officially begun accepting patients. The opening ceremony was attended by Antalya Governor Hulusi Şahin, Members of Parliament representing Antalya, Akdeniz University Rector Prof. Dr. Özlenen Özkan, Prof. Dr. Ömer Özkan, philanthropist İrfan Aktaş and his wife Esen Aktaş, who jointly cut the ceremonial ribbon.
The newly constructed Neurology Outpatient Clinic, located adjacent to Block K of Akdeniz University Hospital, has entered service as Block N. The opening ceremony was attended by prominent public officials, university administrators, healthcare leaders, faculty members, hospital managers, and staff.
On the Path to Becoming Türkiye’s Healthcare Hub
Speaking at the ceremony, Antalya Governor Hulusi Şahin expressed his satisfaction at seeing a modest foundation laid only nine months ago transformed into a major healthcare facility. He emphasized the importance of community support in public investments and highlighted Antalya’s strong tradition of philanthropy.
Governor Şahin noted that significant healthcare investments are currently underway in the city and stated that several new healthcare facilities were inaugurated on the same day, while another project's foundation was laid. He praised the contributions of philanthropists who continue to support healthcare development in Antalya.
A Major Healthcare Campus with More Than 2,000 Beds
Governor Şahin also underlined the importance of institutional support for healthcare investments. He announced that substantial financial contributions had been secured from the Turkish Banks Association and the Antalya Chamber of Commerce and Industry. Referring to the ongoing construction of the new 900-bed hospital building, he stated that once integrated with the existing hospital complex, Akdeniz University Hospital will exceed a capacity of 2,000 beds, making it one of the largest university hospitals in Türkiye.
He further emphasized that, upon completion of the ongoing strengthening and modernization projects, Antalya will become a model healthcare center distinguished by both structural safety and service quality.
Governor Şahin thanked philanthropist İrfan Aktaş and contractor Özcan Bey for completing the Neurology Outpatient Clinic in such a short period and described the project as an exemplary achievement.
An Investment Worth 81 Million TL with Philanthropic Support
Akdeniz University Rector Prof. Dr. Özlenen Özkan stated that the new outpatient clinic building, which has a total indoor area of 2,111 square meters, was completed with an investment of 81.068 million Turkish Lira.
She noted that one of the most remarkable aspects of the project was the contribution made by philanthropist İrfan Aktaş, who financed 35 percent of the total cost, amounting to 27.868 million Turkish Lira. The remaining 65 percent was funded through the university’s own resources.
“Alongside our commitment to using university resources effectively, this project also reflects Antalya’s longstanding culture of philanthropy,” said Rector Özkan. “I sincerely thank Mr. İrfan Aktaş for his valuable support. Contributions made to healthcare create a lasting impact on countless lives, and this clinic will continue serving patients for many years to come.”
Advanced Comfort and Modern Design for Neurology Patients
Rector Özkan emphasized that the new building addresses not only technical requirements but also significantly enhances patient comfort and working conditions through its modern architectural design.
She noted that many neurology patients require long-term follow-up and may face difficulties accessing healthcare services. Therefore, the building was designed in collaboration with the Faculty of Architecture to create a spacious, welcoming, and patient-friendly environment.
The facility includes modern outpatient examination rooms, EEG and EMG units, intervention rooms, a neurosonology unit, classrooms, meeting halls, and dedicated academic workspaces.
A Call to Antalya’s Business Community
Drawing attention to the strong culture of philanthropy at leading universities around the world, Rector Özkan invited Antalya’s business community to strengthen its partnership with Akdeniz University.
“Antalya is a powerful city with its tourism, agriculture, and commerce sectors. Every contribution made to healthcare, education, and science adds value to the future of this city,” she stated.
Akdeniz University Hospital Undergoing Comprehensive Renewal
Rector Özkan also provided updates on other major healthcare investments currently underway at the university. She announced that construction of the new 900-bed hospital building is progressing rapidly, while structural reinforcement works continue in Block B, which previously suffered fire damage.
She reaffirmed the university’s goal of transforming Akdeniz University Hospital into one of Türkiye’s leading healthcare centers and thanked the architects, technical teams, contractors, and distinguished guests who contributed to the project.
“This Project Would Not Have Been Possible Without Their Support”
In his speech, philanthropist İrfan Aktaş expressed his gratitude to everyone involved in bringing the project to life, particularly Akdeniz University Rector Prof. Dr. Özlenen Özkan and Prof. Dr. Ömer Özkan.
“I have previously supported many valuable institutions through building projects, but the Neurology Clinic at Akdeniz University has been the most exciting and meaningful project for us. This initiative would not have been possible without the vision and leadership of Prof. Dr. Özlenen Özkan and Prof. Dr. Ömer Özkan,” he said.
Aktaş also thanked General Secretary Dr. Ali Evren İmre, the Rectorate’s Executive Office, the Faculty of Architecture, and the contractor responsible for the construction. He wished success to the healthcare professionals who will serve patients in the new facility and concluded his speech by expressing his hope that the clinic would bring lasting benefits to Antalya and the region.
Following the speeches, a commemorative plaque was presented to İrfan Aktaş and his family in recognition of their contributions. The ceremony concluded with prayers, the ribbon-cutting, and a guided tour of the newly opened facility led by Governor Hulusi Şahin, Rector Özkan, and accompanying guests.
