Laser Vision Correction Treatment Now Available at Akdeniz University Hospital

The Refractive Surgery Center at Akdeniz University Hospital was officially inaugurated by Rector Prof. Dr. Özlenen Özkan. The center will provide advanced laser treatments for vision disorders such as myopia, astigmatism, and hyperopia.
The opening ceremony was attended by Akdeniz University Rector Prof. Dr. Özlenen Özkan, Director of the Prof. Dr. Tuncer Karpuzoğlu Organ Transplantation and Advanced Health Research Institute Prof. Dr. Ömer Özkan, Vice Rector Prof. Dr. Ayşe Gülbin Arıcı, Chief Physician Prof. Dr. Yıldıray Çete, deputy chief physicians, academic staff, and hospital personnel.
A More Advanced, Accessible, and Modern Service
Speaking at the opening ceremony, Rector Prof. Dr. Özlenen Özkan stated:
"Today marks another proud moment for our hospital. With the opening of our Refractive Surgery Center, we are introducing another pioneering healthcare service for Antalya and the surrounding region. This center will provide stronger, more accessible, and more modern eye care services for our patients."
Nearly 80,000 Surgeries Performed in 2025
Emphasizing the significant infrastructure improvements achieved over the past five years, Prof. Dr. Özkan said:
"Akdeniz University has made remarkable progress over the last five years. Together, we performed nearly 80,000 surgeries in 2025 alone. We helped solve countless health problems and fulfilled our mission of healing patients through the dedication of our physicians and support staff."
Transforming Lives Through Healthcare
Highlighting the importance of providing hope and care to patients, Prof. Dr. Özkan noted:
"Our work is incredibly valuable because we touch people's lives every day. Recently, following a tragic accident that claimed the lives of ten citizens, including three young Akdeniz University students, five injured patients were referred to our hospital. Three of them were in critical condition, and together with Prof. Dr. Ömer Özkan and our medical team, we immediately performed emergency surgeries. Seeing the hope in the eyes of dozens of family members waiting outside the operating room reminds us how meaningful our profession truly is."
Investing in People and Infrastructure
Prof. Dr. Özkan emphasized the importance of both human resources and technological infrastructure:
"As Akdeniz University, we are committed to strengthening both our healthcare infrastructure and our professional workforce. When we first assumed office, we did not even have a CT scanner available. Through teamwork and determination, we have continuously invested in improving our facilities. The opening of this center represents another important milestone in that journey."
Advanced Treatment for Refractive Errors and Corneal Diseases
Providing information about the new facility, Prof. Dr. Özkan stated:
"This center will offer state-of-the-art treatments for hyperopia, myopia, and astigmatism. Beyond patient care, I also expect significant scientific research to be conducted here. The advanced technology available at this center will not only help patients achieve freedom from glasses but will also play an important role in corneal transplantation procedures and the treatment of corneal diseases."
A Regional Reference Center
Prof. Dr. Özkan expressed confidence that the center would become a leading institution in the region:
"Our Laser Vision Correction Center will provide patients with access to high-tech treatment supported by academic expertise and scientific excellence. I firmly believe that our Refractive Surgery Center will quickly become a regional referral center and further strengthen Akdeniz University's leadership in healthcare. I would like to thank everyone who contributed to the acquisition of this technology and to the ongoing delivery of these valuable services."
Following the speeches, Rector Prof. Dr. Özlenen Özkan and the accompanying delegation officially opened the center with a ribbon-cutting ceremony. The facility, which is the only center of its kind among public institutions in Antalya, was then toured by the guests, who received detailed information about its services and capabilities.
